Capabilities
Accuracy
Every measure ships with a documented tolerance against Praat, and a drift outside its band stops the release.
Reproducibility
Every plot exports as a real document or a real program — a vector figure, a TextGrid, or plotting code that regenerates the same chart from the same data.
Pitch, formants, intensity, and harmonicity measured from the signal and drawn over it, updating as you scrub the timeline.
Import audio files or record from the microphone, and organise a corpus of recordings into projects with groups, tags, and search.
A wideband spectrogram with a choice of built-in colour scales or a custom gradient, formant and pitch tracks drawn to scale over the signal.
Tiered intervals over the signal. Create boundaries by listening, nudge them by the sample, and export TextGrids.
A vowel chart or a formant track, styled and labelled, with a colour scale picked to match the rest of the workspace.
Open several recordings side by side, keep the same analysis settings across them, and export every figure in one pass.
Validation
Praat is the standard tool in phonetics research and teaching. Phonia runs the same recordings through Phonia and Praat under matched settings and holds each measure to the tolerance band on the right.
Most formant checks agree exactly; the remaining residual comes from Praat's own sinc-interpolation window and is recorded in the repository's validation notes. Voice-report measures — jitter, shimmer, harmonicity — are checked on sustained-vowel cases.
132 paired cases run on every change; a drift outside any band stops the release.
| Measure | Praat routine | Tolerance band |
|---|---|---|
| Pitch (F0) | Sound: To Pitch (ac) | ≤ 1% relative |
| Formants F1–F3 | Sound: To Formant (burg) | ≤ max(50 Hz, 3%) |
| Intensity | Sound: To Intensity | ≤ 1 dB |
| Harmonicity | Sound: To Harmonicity (ac) | ≤ 1 dB, voiced |
| Jitter / shimmer | PointProcess (periodic, cc) | ≤ 10%, sustained vowels |

Open source
The analysis engine compiles to WebAssembly for the browser and natively for the desktop app. The source is public, the license is permissive, and everything runs on your own machine.

Zero install. Open the site, drop in a file, measure — and send a collaborator the exact same view with a link, no export step first.

Offline by default, with system file access and a batch mode: point it at a folder overnight and come back to a corpus of measurements.
